The mine was shut down in 1988 after more than 1000 years of almost continuous mining; Since 1992, the Rammelsberg visitor mine has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which since its expansion in 2010 bears the name Rammelsberg Mine, Old Town of Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management.
The Rammelsberg is part of the World Heritage Route of the UNESCO World Heritage in the Harz Mountains.
